Lockdown Policy

Policy Created: 27th August 2025

1. Purpose

At Cheeky Minds, the safety and wellbeing of the children in my care is my highest priority. This policy sets out the procedures to follow if it is safer for children and assistants to remain inside the premises rather than evacuate.

2. Situations Where Lockdown May Be Necessary

• An intruder or unauthorized person on/near the premises.

• Local disturbance or violent incident nearby.

• Dangerous animal or dog loose in the area.

• Environmental hazards (e.g., gas leak, air pollution, chemical spill).

• Any other situation where leaving the building would put children at risk.

3. Lockdown Procedure

1. Signal – I will calmly but firmly instruct children to stop what they are doing.

2. Secure the premises –

   • Lock all doors and windows.

   • Close blinds/curtains if possible.

   • Turn off lights (if appropriate).

3. Move to safe area –

   • Children will be guided to the safest room in the house (pre-identified, away from windows/doors). which

   • Keep children calm and quiet through reassurance, stories, or quiet play.

4. Communication –

   • Do not open the door to anyone unless their identity is verified.

   • Phone emergency services (999) if required.

   • Inform parents as soon as it is safe to do so, but not during immediate danger.

5. Remain in lockdown until I am officially advised by emergency services that it is safe to leave or resume normal activity.

4. Parents/Carers

• Parents will be informed of the lockdown once the situation is safe.

• Parents should not attempt to collect children during a lockdown unless advised it is safe, as this could put themselves and the children at greater risk.

5. Practice

• Lockdown procedures will be explained to children in an age-appropriate way.

• Lockdown drills will be practised at least once a year to ensure familiarity.

6. Review

• This policy will be reviewed annually or after any lockdown incident.
