Accidents Policy
At Cheeky Minds, the safety and well-being of children are our top priorities. This policy outlines our procedures for managing accidents, injuries, and first aid in our childminding setting to ensure a prompt and appropriate response to any incidents.
Preventative Measures
To reduce the risk of accidents and injuries, we implement the following preventative measures:
Risk Assessments: We conduct regular risk assessments to identify and mitigate potential hazards in the setting.
Safe Environment: We maintain a safe and tidy environment, ensuring that all equipment, toys, and furniture meet safety standards.
Supervision: Children are supervised at all times during activities, play, and transitions.
First Aid Training
All childminders and assistants at CHEEKY MINDS are required to have up-to-date first aid training, including paediatric first aid. Training covers:
Basic life support (CPR)
Choking procedures
Treatment for cuts, bruises, burns, and other common injuries
Handling emergency situations
First Aid Kits
We maintain first aid kits that are easily accessible and contain all necessary supplies for providing initial treatment for injuries. These kits are checked regularly to ensure they are fully stocked and items are within their expiration dates.
Procedures for Accidents and Injuries
In the event of an accident or injury, we follow these steps:
Assessment: Assess the severity of the injury and determine if emergency services are required.
First Aid: Administer appropriate first aid treatment based on the nature of the injury.
Contacting Parents: Notify parents or carers as soon as possible, providing details of the accident, the child's condition, and any treatment given.
Recording: Document the accident in the accident and incident log, including the date, time, nature of the injury, treatment provided, and any follow-up actions.
Follow-Up: Monitor the child's condition and, if needed, recommend further medical assessment or treatment.
Emergency Response
If an accident or injury requires emergency medical attention, we will:
Call Emergency Services: Contact emergency services (999) immediately for serious injuries or life-threatening situations.
Provide Information: Share relevant information with emergency responders, including the child's medical history and any known allergies.
Accompany the Child: Ensure a childminder or assistant accompanies the child to the hospital or medical facility, maintaining supervision until a parent or carer arrives.
Incident Reporting
Any serious accidents or injuries, or those requiring emergency medical attention, must be reported to the relevant authorities, including:
Inform Tiney as soon as possible and within 14 days
Inform my Insurance Company Morton Michel as soon as possible
Inform the Health & Safety Executive of any serious reportable accidents or injuries/death of a child whilst in my care and act on any advice given.
It is important that you keep me informed regarding your child’s
condition following an accident and if you have sought medical advice.
